Salma Hayek was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. She was born into a relatively wealthy Mexican family who wanted the best for their daughter, so they sent her to private boarding school in Louisiana.
However, Salma was a rebel right from the start, and when she was 'asked to leave' her private school, so she finished her education in Mexico and as soon as she graduated high school Salma's parents sent her off to live with her aunt in Houston.
By this time, Salma had set her heart on being an actress. She appeared in several Mexican theatre productions and in Spanish-speaking television commercials and a popular soap opera and became a well-known star in Mexico.
But Salma Hayek was ambitious. She wanted to become an international film actress, so she moved to LA in 1991 and spent two troubled years trying to learn the English language. This actually proved difficult for Salma, because she is dyslexic, but she did the best she could and auditioned for a number of movie roles, but never managed to get the leading part.
All this was to change, however, when a new film director Robert Rodriquez, spotted Salma. He cast her in the lead female role for Desperado, the sequel to his successful El Mariachi.
Playing opposite Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek lit up the screen with her latin sexuality. The sex scenes between Hayek and Banderas sizzled and the film became a cult and made both lead characters instant stars.
