From Dusk Till Dawn
(1996) is one of those films which took fans of Robert Rodriguez movies
by surprise, even when they knew it was written by Quentin
Tarantino. By now, most people knew that Rodriguez directed blood
thirsty movies, but the twist in the middle of From Dusk Till Dawn left
most first time viewers totally gob smacked!
The film begins as an action thriller, with two fugitives, the Gecko brothers, played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, fleeing the law after a bank raid which has gone badly wrong and with a bank clerk held hostage in the boot of their car.
The opening sequences are filled with violence and gore, as the brothers proceed to rob a liquor store, killing the owner and a passing cop.
It is only a short time before they kidnap the Fuller family, played by Harvey Keitel, Ernest Liu and Juliette Lewis, hijacking their RV and taking the family along for the ride across the Mexican border.
By this time, we know that things are going to end badly for the Fuller family and probably for the Gecko brothers as well, but what follows next takes us all by surprise.
Just across the border, the Gecko brothers decide to stop at a seedy looking strip joint and insist the Fullers join them for a beer (as if they had the choice).
It is then that the real mayhem breaks out and Salma Hayek makes her appearance as Santanico Pandemonium, the Snake Queen.
The music is pounding, the beer is flowing and the atmosphere is hot, as strippers perform on stage and on table tops, to the delight of the crowd and the consternation of the Fuller Family.
Then from behind the stage a figure is lit in silhouette. It is the Snake Queen. Salma glides onto the stage with a writhing snake around her neck and slowly makes her way to the table where the Geckos and the Fullers are watching open-mouthed.
She dances on the table, snaking her hips and gyrating to the throbbing beat as the brothers look on. Tarantino's character is particularly smitten, as Salma proceeds to drink from his bottle, then lets the liquid pour down her body, down her thighs and onto her feet, where she holds out a bare foot for Tarantino to lick.
Tarantino licks Salma's foot as if he is consuming nectar...but we know this is not going to end well.
Suddenly the whole place is in uproar as everyone apart from the Geckos and the Fullers turn into vampires!
Tarantino's character is promptly bitten by Salma and bleeds to death, and a massive fight for survival ensues, with the help of shotguns, crossbows, holy water and even a pneumatic drill!
By the end of the film only two of the main characters survive, Clooney and Lewis, and somehow, even though we know Clooney is a bad guy, we hope he survives after all he has been through.
Apart form the strong element of surprise and the violence, the most memorable part of From Dusk Till Dawn is definitely the role played by Salma Hayek as Santanico Pandemonium. When she arrived on stage in her tiny bikini and with the snake wriggling around her neck, it wasn't only the Gecko bothers who were open-mouthed. Wherever the movie played, the whole cinema watched in awe.
